WELL AND SANITARY FACILITIES CONSTRUCTION AT THE BRAINY KIDS ACADEMY IN ACCRA, GHANA

At the request of the association “Ingenieure ohne Grenzen” (Engineers Without Borders), the Peter Krämer Foundation supported the construction of a well and gender-separated toilets at the P. Brainy Kids Academy in Accra, Ghana.

Below is the association's report and pictures taken on site:

At the end of August 2025, three employees from Engineers Without Borders Germany—Amelie Nacke, Carlos Chillon-Geck, and Marcus Lindemann—traveled to Accra for 18 days. Once there, they met with their local partner, World Vision Ghana, and the contracted construction company to coordinate the upcoming construction work in detail.

During the trip, the exact scope of the construction work was determined, the final price was agreed upon, and the construction site was prepared for the work to begin in the following months. In addition, preliminary work was carried out on the school building. To better assess local construction practices, the team visited other construction sites under the responsibility of the district engineer in charge.

To ensure the sustainable use of the new infrastructure, a WASH committee was established, which will be responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the sanitary facilities and the rainwater harvesting system in the future. In addition, the team conducted hygiene workshops with the WASH committee and teachers, as well as with another school class. The aim of the workshops was to prepare the students for the use of the new facilities and to raise awareness of the importance of personal hygiene in the long term.
