Since the end of the civil war in 1994, the poverty rate has fallen from over 70 percent to 46 percent in 2013. At the same time, access to educational facilities increased dramatically. Today, 98 percent of girls are sent to primary school. For boys, the rate is 95 percent. 73 percent of all elementary school students (girls and boys) graduate. That’s 20 percent more than in 2008. The teacher-student ratio is 1:62.

What we have achieved so far

  • From 2008 to 2012, 80 schools were built and equipped for more than 120,000 students.
  • Teaching materials were provided for more than 500,000 children.
  • More than 90,000 students benefited from intensified teacher training.
  • The quality of teaching methods has been greatly enhanced by a mentoring program for teachers. More than 60,000 students benefited from this.
  • More than 4,500 refugee children from the Democratic Republic of Congo have been integrated into the national education system.

What is planned for the future
